When the power goes out
Out past Hedgesville, Bunker Hill and Gerrardstown, an outage is not just an inconvenience — if you are on a well, losing power means losing water, and a stopped sump pump can mean a flooded basement. A standby generator monitors utility power and starts automatically within seconds, with no cords to drag out in a storm.
Sizing the unit is a three-part decision. First we take a wattage inventory of the loads you want to keep running — furnace, refrigerator, well pump, lights, medical equipment. Second we add the startup surge of inductive loads: a well pump or sump pump can draw three to five times its running watts for the first second, which is what trips an undersized generator. Third we check the transfer breaker capacity at your panel, because the automatic transfer switch limits how many circuits can move to backup at once. The wattage inventory sets the floor, the surge load sets the ceiling, and the transfer breaker capacity decides how the available kilowatts are distributed across circuits. We install the automatic transfer switch, coordinate the gas or propane connection, and commission the system so you know it works before you need it.
